How
to Help, Volunteer Opportunities

Part
of our Team
Choose to volunteer and you become part of the hospice
interdisciplinary team. You’ll join a group of dedicated and caring individuals
who offer supportive medical, social and volunteer services to patients and families
who are facing the difficulties of a life limiting illness.
Concerned men
and women of all ages can be Hospice volunteers. Our volunteers come from all
walks of life and are united in a common desire to serve their communities. So
if you’re willing to give your time and talents to help Hospice families in many
ways, then we would love to have you as part of our family.
Trained
for Service
We make sure that nobody gets in over their head.
Our extensive training course gives volunteers are a basic orientation to Loving
Care and to the volunteer program. Prospective volunteers also learn about the
hospice concept of care, the services offered by Loving Care and the role of volunteers.
When
training is completed, volunteers may select their area of involvement in the
program. You can choose direct patient contact or one of many other supporting
positions depending on your skill and comfort level.
Volunteering
in the Home
Working with the patient and family is one of the
most personal ways a volunteer can become involved. By providing supportive in-home
care, you become a friend and confidant to the patient and family.
Volunteers
serve as non-judgmental listeners and often form close and lasting relationships
with patients and their family members. The duties of a patient/family volunteer
include sitting with the patient, shopping, transporting the patient or a family
member to appointments, reading to the patient, chatting about current events,
doing laundry and light house-cleaning or delivering cookies or a fruit basket.
Office
Volunteers
Loving Care relies on volunteers to staff the reception
desk at the London office. Here, you would answer the phone, shred discarded documents,
wash the laundry, clean and inventory returned equipment, participate in an annual
“spring cleaning” of the offices and assist with various computer tasks such as
document design and preparing donor “thank you” notes.
Other
Volunteer Opportunities
Professional volunteers are also needed
to assist patients with tasks as varied as will or tax preparation, haircuts,
financial counseling, massage or artistic expression (music, art crafts).
We
are always looking for volunteers to help plan and assist with various fundraising
events. Volunteers are also needed to deliver, and later, pickup hospital beds
and other equipment, deliver donor envelopes to local funeral homes and brochures
to community service centers, and pickup donated items for fundraising events.
Use
Your Skills
You have many options as a hospice volunteer. You
also have the ability to choose assignments that best suit your time, skills and
interests. Hospice staff, patients and families often acknowledge their appreciation
for volunteers. Volunteers assist with:
- Barbering and Hair Styling
- Bereavement Calls
- Computer Input
- Equipment Moving
- Errands
- Friendly Visits
- Fundraising
- Handyman Chores
- House

- Laundry
- Massage
